For a small minority of users, there was a bug in the earlier 3.8 releases that prevented starred words and search history (from pre3.8 versions) being retained in 3.8+ versions. This has been fixed in this release. However, if you have previously updated to 3.8.0/3.8.1/3.8.2 then you may need to do some small steps to get you starred words back. First, try simply running the app (version 3.8.3). If all your starred words and search history are restored then you don’t need to read on.

Better navigation - in older versions of Hanping, it could take many Back-presses to go back through all the dictionary entries to get to the Search screen. Long-pressing the Back button has always been the fast-track way to do this. However, hacking the Back button in this way goes against Android standards, so now we have replaced this with a simple click on the top-left app icon. So, if ever you want to go “up” from the Browse screen to the Search screen, simply press the top-left app icon.

Better phrase support - now you can star Chinese phrases (or any Chinese word even if it is not in the dictionary). Also provides Pinyin* for those phrases and the ability to play the corresponding audio. This is great for building phrase lists - build your own phrase book! Tweaked the way results are formatted in the search page. Now, instead of the old two-column format (Hanzi on the left, Pinyin on the right), the Hanzi runs right across the screen and the Pinyin follows likewise.

Minor bug fixes regarding handling of corrupt database file Audio enhancements* * Hanping Pro now includes brand new audio files (provided by FlashDragon Publishing, LLC). New users will automatically receive these files when they download the audio files when installing Hanping Pro. Made some changes to the Word Details screen: Moved “External Websites” icon down to below entry description (now called “Links”) Added “Search” icon (also below description) allowing easy searches related to the currently displayed word. EDIT: 31 March 2011 - First stable release of 2.5.0, today. This is a major update. Most of the changes are internal allowing for exciting enhancements in future updates. Other changes include: Much better search results - search results are now shown dynamically which means as you scroll down, Hanping searches deeper into the dictionary to find more matches. For example, type “pengyou” (which means friend) and you will see not only the entry for “朋友” (péngyou, friend) but also for “男朋友” (nánpéngyou, boyfriend) and “女朋友” (nǚpéngyou, girlfriend) History - any successful search you type is now automatically added to your History of searches.

Much better management of Faves/Starred words. Now, a “Starred” word corresponds one-to-one with whether the Star icon (second screen) is glowing. If a word is Starred, then you can assign any number of Tags. These correspond to the old “User List” names. The main benefit of this change is that now you can see all your Starred words together at the same time (called the “All Starred” list). When viewing the list of Starred lists, you can now see how many words are in each list (number in brackets after list name).

Performance bug fix for when decomposing long search strings (was very slow on pre-2.2 devices)

Some speed improvements by no longer partially matching English when it is very short Now, before user ever specifies Pinyin or English, the searching will try to match Pinyin first. Before, if user started the app and typed “wo”, they would get results matching English (for example results about “Wo river”). Now, because Pinyin matching is tried first, the Pinyin matches will come up instead together with an “English” button allowing the user to see English matches.

Allows you to send a dictionary entry (Chinese, Pinyin and English) as an email, Twitter, Google Buzz etc Traditional & Simplified chars can now be displayed together. On the main screen, hit Menu and then you will see the current setting (probably “Simplified”). Press the menu option to cycle through the four different display types: Simplified, Simp [Trad], Traditional, Trad [Simp]. The second screen still only shows either simplified or traditional (never both).

Added word-of-the-day widget. This is updated every 24 hours and picks a random word from the 1000 most frequent two-character chinese words. Place more than one widget on your homescreen for the best effect!

Lots of behind the scenes improvements here primarily geared towards the search results, in particular ordering. Exact matches always come before inexact matches. Searching using traditional vs simplified characters gives the same results. For example, if you search for “国” while in Traditional Mode, you will still see the result for “國” (which is the traditional variant). Before, you would get no results. Note - you need to update the dictionary to get this behaviour.
