The main thing we wanted to achieve was a better user-experience than with Google Translate. Here are some of things we think it does better:
1. Text-to-speech support for source text (not just translated text) 2. Bing Translator (we actually find this much better for some languages - for example Chinese.) 3. Language detection combines both Google and Bing to get a more reliable language-detection result 4. When the language cannot be detected, a convenient language selection dialog is displayed 5. Reverse-translate - for checking whether a translation is reasonably likely to be correct 6. When viewing translations in history, far nicer way to view the translation - side-by-side, original language (possibly detected language), target language and translation engine used.
Pro version only: 7. Much better (compared to Google Translate) support for SMS messages. Optionally append original message with translation. Also, optionally append translation as message arrives in Inbox.
Here is what we think Google Translate does better:
a) Google Dictionary for one word translations b) Web Translations - no idea how they do this - would like to know! c) Searching history - how useful is this? d) Better Translate Lite has ads (and doesn’t support SMS translations); Better Translate Pro is not free
