For any of you running MIUI 11 (which is the system running on most Xiaomi devices released in the past couple of years), you might have experienced an issue with the AnkiDroid Flashcards integration. For a small minority of users, there was a bug in the earlier 3.8 releases that prevented starred words and search history (from pre3.8 versions) being retained in 3.8+ versions. This has been fixed in this release. However, if you have previously updated to 3.8.0/3.8.1/3.8.2 then you may need to do some small steps to get you starred words back. First, try simply running the app (version 3.8.3). If all your starred words and search history are restored then you don’t need to read on.

On 22.02.2014, we officially retired our Hanping Chinese Classic app for Android. Originally released as Hanping Chinese Dictionary back on 13 October 2009, this was our first Android app, and first Chinese app too. On 28 January 2012, it was the first Chinese language-learning Android app to reach 500,000 downloads on Google Play, and ended up with 924,038 downloads. The vast majority of those downloads were achieved before we released Hanping Chinese Dictionary Lite (on 7 September 2012) which superseded the Classic app.

Clipboard Monitoring (Android 4.0+) - when you copy Chinese characters into the Clipboard you can optionally get a system notification showing the definition. Better navigation - in older versions of Hanping, it could take many Back-presses to go back through all the dictionary entries to get to the Search screen. Long-pressing the Back button has always been the fast-track way to do this. However, hacking the Back button in this way goes against Android standards, so now we have replaced this with a simple click on the top-left app icon. So, if ever you want to go “up” from the Browse screen to the Search screen, simply press the top-left app icon.

We’ve just released a new free edition of Hanping Chinese Dictionary targeted specifically for Gingerbread (and higher) devices. This means there is no need for an internet connection to download/install the dictionary data on first run. Unfortunately paid Android apps are currently unavailable in China & Taiwan amongst others (for a full list of paid-app countries see here although it’s not always up-to-date). Android Market determines your “country” by checking which country your sim card comes from. If it comes from a paid-app supported country then you will be able to view, buy and download paid apps. Otherwise, they will be hidden away from you. So, the simplest way to buy paid apps is to temporarily swap out your Chinese/Taiwanese sim card for another sim card from a paid-app country.

As most of you know, paid Android apps are not available in China or Taiwan, but there are a couple of tricks to work around this (such as the sim card swap). The key point to know is that (at least for smartphones), your location is determined by the country of your sim card. So, if you are using a US, UK, German etc sim card then you will see paid apps no matter where you are.

Better phrase support - now you can star Chinese phrases (or any Chinese word even if it is not in the dictionary). Now, instead of the old two-column format (Hanzi on the left, Pinyin on the right), the Hanzi runs right across the screen and the Pinyin follows likewise.

Fixed bug regarding list items not in dictionary. This bug appeared in 2.5.0-2.5.3. For example, bringing up the hsk6 list would show the same entry (報酬, 报仇,”bao4 chou5″) multiple times due to a caching bug. It was this entry because this was the first entry in hsk6 that does not appear in the dictionary (CC-CEDICT 2.1.1). All later list items not in the dictionary were showing as the “bao4 chou5″ also.

Some minor widget enhancements - now you can force that the phonetics are never displayed in the widget. Also, if you reinstall the app or reboot your device, the old word is still shown Improved swipe left/right, up/down on Word Details screen - there was a bug introduced in 2.5.3 where (at least on Xperia X10) swiping left/right or up/down no longer worked. Lots of behind the scenes improvements here primarily geared towards the search results, in particular ordering. Exact matches always come before inexact matches. Searching using traditional vs simplified characters gives the same results. For example, if you search for “国” while in Traditional Mode, you will still see the result for “國” (which is the traditional variant). Before, you would get no results. Note - you need to update the dictionary to get this behaviour.
